What is NEET

NEET is the short form of The National Eligibility Entrance Test. It is an all-India entrance examination from 2019. NEET is a single-level entrance exam for medical programmes in India. Before NEET, State Authorities prepared for admissions to BSMS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS courses. According to that merit list, candidates get a chance to take the course. But now, NEET is mandatory for medical studies in India. Eligibility of NEET

Students who have cleared their 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, and English are eligible to appear for NEET. The candidate has to produce the original certificate at the time of the counseling round. Marks in Mathematics are not considered in the (NEET-UG).

 The percentage of the 12th standard is required for the NEET exam. For PCB students, the aggregate marks of the 12 the standard is necessary for NEET. According to the reservations, mark’s requirements are different.

1. MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery)

MBBS is one of the main courses under NEET. It is a five-year degree programme covering the following basic subjects – Biochemistry, Physiology, Human Anatomy, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology. After the successful MBBS admission through NEET, this course provides practical training for five years. Students get to interact with patients directly and gather knowledge of different diseases. It promises a bright career after neet.

2. BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery)

BDS course offers a career after NEET in dentistry. 4-5 years are required to complete this course. This course includes – Dental anatomy, dental materials, surgical treatments, oral pathology and histology, Endodontics, community dentistry, radiology, and oral medicine.

3. BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

The duration of this course is 5.5 years. It also includes 1 year of internship. This course is considered an alternative form of medicine. The National Institute of Homeopathy governs this course. This subject is becoming popular in India and also overseas.

4. BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery)

It requires knowledge of Unani Science. After the successful completion of this course, one will be known as an Hakim. It is a 5.5 years long programme with an internship. A student opting for this course must be proficient in Urdu.

5. BSMS (Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery)

This course in Siddha school of medicine is one of the most popular Ayush courses. This is a 5.5-year-long programme with a year-long internship session that is mandatory.

6. BPT Physiotherapy

This course includes the fundamentals of Human Anatomy, Clinical biochemistry, Exercise Therapy, Human Physiology, and Electrotherapy. It is a 4.5 year-long course with a 6-month long internship programme. A student learns some clinical courses covered here like general surgery, general medicine, orthopaedics, neurology and cardiorespiratory to practice Physiotherapy.

7. BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery)

BAMS is a 5 years undergraduate degree programme that makes the students familiar with the concepts of Ayurveda and uses them for the treatment of patients. BAMS includes Ayurveda with modern medicines. Students learn both of the courses.

Administrative Body

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has been performing the role of administrator for conducting all India competitive exams and has conducted NEET (UG) since 2019.


The question papers are set in English, Hindi, Marathi, Odia, Tamil, Marathi, Urdu Bengali, Telugu, Kannada, and Assamese. The exam is taken on — Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology).

There are a total of 180 questions in NEET-UG. The division is 45 questions each from Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology. Each correct response earns 4 marks, and each incorrect response gets -1 negative marking. The exam is conducted for 3 hours (180 mins). The exam is of a total of 720 marks.

After the NEET results are announced, an All India Rank (AIR) is allotted to each candidate, and a merit list is released. NTA declares the counselling process. The schedule for NEET counselling gets uploaded on the Medical Counselling Website. The Medical Council of India conducts counselling procedures. 15% seats are reserved for the States, Central Universities and Deemed Universities. 85% of seats are allotted for state and private colleges. States prepare their separate merit list based on NEET-UG results.

Students who cannot succeed in NEET should not be disappointed because there are many career options if NEET is not cleared. There are many medical courses without NEET. There are many Biology related courses without NEET.   These are
