The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune is located in SavitriBai Phule Pune University is an autonomous institute. The center is dedicated to the various areas of research in Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Physics.
IUCAA offers challenging opportunities to young students aspiring to do a Ph.D. in Astrophysics and Astronomy along with a specialisation in Solar Physics, High-energy Physics and Data Analysis, Large Scale Structure, Gravitation, Cosmology, Multiwavelength Ground and Space wave observations, and Extra-Galactic Astronomy.

Admissions in IUCAA
IUCAA offers admissions to the students appearing for either of the three levels.
IUCAA National Admission Test is conducted every year to find out the best talent from the pool of candidates. IUCAA is constantly looking for motivated young students with extraordinary academic records. Every year, INAT is conducted in January for admissions to Ph.D. program for the following year.
But, this year due to pandemics the exam date has been shifted to 10th September 2021.
2.JEST (Joint Entrance Screening Test)
The Joint Entrance Screening Test is conducted on the third Sunday of February every year. The test is conducted at IUCAA, Pune, and all other centers in India.
3.JRF (Junior Research Fellowship)-for Physics
The students who have qualified for JRF twice in the previous two years are eligible to apply. Candidates qualifying for lectureship are not eligible for the admission programs through JRF.
Eligibility Criteria for admissions in IUCAA
Candidates who have completed their M.Sc. (in Physics/ Astronomy/ Electronics/ Applied Mathematics), or B.E./ B-Tech (any branch), Integrated B.E./ B-Tech/ M.Sc./ M.Tech/ M.E. by August are eligible to apply.
In addition to this, interested candidates from final year B.Sc. 1st-year M.Sc., 2nd, 3rd, and final year B.E./ B.Tech students can also apply to be Pre-Selected for a research fellowship at IUCAA.
Selection Criteria at IUCAA
IUCAA is constantly looking for young motivated students having a keen interest in science, space, and astronomy. Along with interest and passion for science, the institute also looks for a consistently high academic record.
Selection is based on the written test and interview conducted solely by IUCAA.
Application Procedure at IUCAA
The mode of application for INAT is completely online. Offline applications are not accepted. No fees is charged for applying for INAT Entrance Test. Screening is done before the final written and interview round. Screening Committees involve IUCAA faculty members who evaluate the candidates’ profiles and shortlist for written tests. Shortlisted students are informed by email. Interviews are then conducted immediately after the written test.
The mode of application is online. Offline applications are not accepted by the institute. Subsequent amount of application fee is charged, details of which are available at http://www.jest.org.in/. JEST is conducted in various cities throughout India.
After the declaration of results, students are required to apply online. Selected candidates for interviews are informed via email. Interviews are conducted in May or June every year.
3. CSIR-UGC NET for JRF (Physics)
Students are required to apply online through JRF. Screening round followed by the written test is conducted for the individuals whose profile clear screening round. Interviews are taken immediately after the written test.
Note: The student has to produce a letter from the CSIR-UGC informing about their qualification as JRF at the time of interview failing to which admission will be withheld.
